Abstract
The contributions of the so-called shake-off and two step mechanisms t o the fivefold differential cross section of the double ionization of helium are studied and compared to recent theoretical results. A simpl e qualitative model for the estimation of the contribution of both mec hanisms is proposed for experimentators. The predictions reproduce qua litatively the results of more elaborate theoretical calculations.
