In order to obtain evidence for the presence of Chlorobium-derived pet
roporphyrins in the Julia Creek oil shales a range of simple porphyrin
s (10d-i) carrying the type of side chain characteristic of Chlorobium
chlorophylls has been prepared for study by mass spectroscopic techni
ques. One approach to the preparation of a Chlorobium-type petroporphy
rin by ring synthesis has met with very limited success.
