The reaction of cyclohexylamine, sulfur, and hydrogen sulfide in a 2:1
-mixture of ethanol and water gives a red cyclohexylammonium polysulfi
de solution. Orange crystals of the title compound can be obtained by
slow cooling. The compound crystallizes in the centrosymmetric triclin
ic space group P (1) over bar. The lattice constants are a = 8.478(7)
Angstrom; b = 11.97(1) Angstrom, c = 14.141(8) Angstrom, alpha = 102.6
0(6)degrees, beta = 90.53(5)degrees, gamma = 90.43(7)degrees. The S-7(
2-)-chain has an uncommon cis-trans-cis conformation with a sequence o
f the signs of torsion angles of (+--+) and (-++-).
