Abstract
In this article, the auto-Backlund transformation of the sine-Gordon e quation is formulated as a gauge transformation acting on the Lax conn ection and preserving its form. This gauge transformation contains the known Darboux transformation as a special case. Therefore the auto-Ba cklund transformation is a dressinglike symmetry but of a different ki nd in general than the dressing transformation. Only in the case of th e transformation between the vacuum and one-soliton solution are these two kinds of transformations equivalent. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.
