Rj. Itkin et al., ULCERATIVE UROCYSTITIS IN A DOG ASSOCIATED WITH A NOCARDIA-LIKE ORGANISM, The Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, 30(3), 1994, pp. 296-299
A 5.8-year-old boxer presented for evaluation of chronic hematuria unr
esponsive to antibiotics. Radiography of the abdomen revealed possible
dystrophic mineralization of the urinary bladder. Contrast cystograph
y revealed a thickened cranioventral bladder wall. Ultrasonography of
the abdomen demonstrated multiple cavitary lesions within the prostate
gland. Surgical laparotomy and urinary bladder biopsy were performed.
Ulcerative urocystitis of undetermined etiology was diagnosed. Gram s
tain of the bladder tissue revealed Nocardia-like organisms. Therapy w
ith procaine penicillin and sulfisoxazole resulted in resolution of th
e hematuria.
