In this article, an ENDOR analysis of the S-2(-) defect in Rbl is pres
ented. A complete angular variation of one set of Rb-85 and Rb-87 ENDO
R transitions is measured. The corresponding hyperfine and nuclear qua
drupole coupling tensors are determined. The orientation of the princi
pal axes of these tensors is in good agreement with the overall D-2h s
ymmetry of the S-2(-) ion in the lattice. The ENDOR results clearly le
ad to a monovacancy model, wherein the S-2(-) ion is replacing one I-
ion on a lattice site. The linewidth of the EPR signals can be explain
ed using the ENDOR data A comparison with previous ENDOR studies of O-
2(-) and S-2(-) defects in rubidium halides is made.
