Tunnel junctions of the type metal/oxide/noble metal are contacted wit
h an electrolyte where the noble metal is the working electrode. Hot e
lectrons passing through the oxide film reach the metal/electrolyte in
terface and occupy protonic states in the electrolyte. Pulse experimen
ts indicate an adsorbed hydrogen phase at the silver/electrolyte inter
face.
