An apparatus consisting of a modified batch-drainage tester, an electr
onic balance, and a computer data-acquisition system is presented. The
apparatus yields a full batch-drainage curve that represents dewateri
ng on the forming table to the dry line. Experimental results provide
valuable insights into drainage and can be used to characterize pulps,
wires, and screens. In the second part of this paper, a comprehensive
model is presented for sheet structure and flow during forming. The m
odel provides a good predictive basis for research in this field.
