Abstract
It is argued that a realistic methodology for statistical inference sh ould embody the stance that, as a rule, a statistical analysis will le ad to a set of partly conflicting inferential statements. According to this viewpoint the axiomatization that forms the basis of Birnbaum's theorem, and hence the theorem itself, is considered statistically inv alid.
