We discuss a new strategy which allows one to drive a chaotic system i
n such a way that it exhibits some desired behavior. The imposed behav
ior can be a harmonic or other kind of signal, including a chaotic one
produced by another chaotic system. The method is based on the idea o
f synchronization of chaotic systems, and more specifically on the rob
ustness of this phenomenon versus parameter mismatch. The method consi
sts of the introduction of the driving signal in an appropriate term o
f the evolution equations of the system under study, so that it become
s synchronized with the signal. The synchronization condition is discu
ssed in terms of the corresponding transverse Lyapunov exponents. The
possibility of inducing chaotic behavior in a nonlinear system which i
s in the stationary regime is also considered.
