This paper describes the experience with the use of ultrasound in dise
ases of the urogenital tract, the gastrointestinal tract and the heart
in birds. Sonographic examination was performed in avian patients of
the Clinic for Avian Diseases in the last two years. Physiological app
earence of the organs as well as some cases of frequently diagnosed pa
thological alterations are described. With this diagnostic tool cysts
or tumors of the kidneys and the ovary as well as egg binding may be s
een. In different diseases of the gastrointestinal tract we found thic
kening of the wall. Hydropericard is a commonly seen pathological alte
ration of the heart. The advantages and disadvantages of the sonograph
ic examination in the diagnosis of diseases of the urogenital and gast
rointestinal tract and the heart as well as in useful combination with
other diagnostic tools are discussed.
