Derivatization methods for analysis of single cell components by capil
lary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection are rev
iewed. Recent advances have lead to the use of this technique for the
identification of amino acids and proteins in many different cell line
s ranging in size from 8 to 140 mu m. Pre-column, on-column, and post-
column methods of derivatization are examined in order to determine wh
ich results in the least amount of sample handling and dilution leadin
g to better detection limits for the analytes of interest.
