Abstract
The authors report the observation of ultrafast all-optical switching in an integrated symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer using the nonre sonant nonlinearity of Al0.18Ga0.82As below half the bandgap. A relati ve switching fraction of similar to 50% has been achieved using 10ps p ulses at a wavelength of 1.55 mu m from a synchronously pumped modeloc ked colour-centre laser.
