Abstract
Generalizations on the nature of the intrinsic isotope effect, leading to several spectroscopic and chemical applications of the deuterium i sotope effect, are outlined. The equilibrium chemical shift isotope ef fect, which can be observed further from the substitution center than the intrinsic isotope effect, and its applications are also discussed.
