Abstract
We have reevaluated the gene assignments of the proline mutant alleles of some known Pro(-) Escherichia coli strains. Of nine proline auxotr ophs included in the study, five presented phenotypes inconsistent wit h their previously assigned genotypes. We discuss the possible sources and the consequences of these assignment errors.
