Abstract
Recrystallization of [Fe([9]aneS(3))Cl-3] from hot acetonitrile or met hanol resulted in the isolation of a red crystalline product subsequen tly identified as [Fe([9]aneS(3))(2)] [FeCl4]. 2H(2)O which has been c haracterized by X-ray diffraction. The bimetallic complex salt is comp osed of an octahedral, low-spin Fe-II cation and tetrahedral, high-spi n Fe-II anion. Reduction of the metal centre by the ligand and formati on of the thermodynamically stable complex [Fe([9]aneS(3))(2)](2+) in solution is proposed.
