PHARMACOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT OF CANCER PAIN

This article describes three types of cancer pain-somatic, visceral, a nd neuropathic. Descriptions of the location, intensity, quality, and temporal pattern of the cancer patient's pain can be used to determine the appropriate pharmacologic management of the pain. Improved cancer pain management is possible when etiology of the pain and the mechani sms of drug action are considered in development of a therapy plan.
