The transfer matrix of a layer is derived from the dynamic equations o
f a continuum reinforced with very thin unstretchable membranes. For t
he case of a periodically spaced reinforcement, the finite difference
method enables to find closed solutions. The elastic wave propagation
in a half-space is investigated, and it is shown that the only possibl
e nonattenuating wave has the velocity c(2) of the shear wave.
