Abstract
Several calcarenite samples from Mezapos area (South Peloponnesus, Gre ece) have been studied biochemically by extracting the sterols trapped during the sedimentation. The results have shown that specific compou nds deposited in Pliocene sediments can be preserved far up to ca. 3,0 00,000 years. These markers therefore provide an indication of marine facies and may be used to determine the limit of a marine transgressio n.
