The practice of using fumigants to control internal decay has been wid
ely accepted in the United States and has been shown to be effective i
n controlling internal decay in transmission poles and other large woo
d timbers. Mathematical models were developed to simulate chloropicrin
movement in utility poles after treatment. The simulation results ind
icated that treatment of utility poles, using either traditional remed
ial treatment procedures or center-bore application procedures could p
rovide long-term effectiveness in terms of eliminating existing infect
ion and preventing further fungal attack. Controlled-release technolog
y used in fumigant treatment was also shown to be potentially useful i
n reducing the amount of chemical used in treatments and also for exte
nding the useful period of protection.
