Abstract
The oxidation of selected nonphenolic lignin beta-0-4 model compounds with ceric(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) was compared to results obtained with lignin peroxidase (LiP). The amount of C-alpha-C-beta cleavage w as dependent on the free radical stability, although differences were observed between CAN and LiP for a C-gamma-methyl compound. These resu lts and prior studies suggest that the two reagents probably cleave li gnin models by different pathways.
