Wa. Hochwarter et al., NEGATIVE AFFECTIVITY AS A MODERATOR OF THE INEQUITY-TURNOVER RELATIONSHIP, Journal of social behavior and personality, 10(4), 1995, pp. 757-770
This field study investigated the moderating influence of negative aff
ectivity (NA) on the inequity-intentions to turnover relationship. it
was hypothesized that those who were not negatively predisposed would
report stronger intentions to turnover when faced with inequity than t
hose who were. The basis for this hypothesis was provided by Weitz (19
52) who found that disposition affected reaction to one's environment.
Weitz maintained that negative stimuli affect non-negative people mor
e since negativity represents a greater contrast from their day-today
lives. On the other hand, individuals who are negatively predisposed a
re less sensitive to adverse situations, including a dissatisfying job
environment. Consistent with past research, data from 102 managers in
dicated that both high and low NAs reported increased turnover intenti
ons when faced with inequity. However, the relationship was much stron
ger for those who were not negatively predisposed. Limitations of the
present study as well as directions for future research are discussed.
