Hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane by water catalyzed by small amounts of
hydrated copper(II) chloride, copper(II) nitrate and copper(II) perch
lorate in ethanol was investigated using Si-29 NMR. The results showed
significantly faster hydrolysis in the system catalyzed by the perchl
orate. One reason for the difference is the variation in acidity of co
pper salts in alcohol.
