In order to give a theoretical interpretation of the results of the ra
pid coagulation measured in the case of a haematite suspension, we con
sidered the influence of close hydrodynamic and van der Waals interact
ions on the basis of a model in which the surfaces of interacting part
icles have areas with variable curvature radii. The formula given by D
erjaguin and Muller, Dokl. Acad. Nauk SSSR, 176 (1967) 738, Spielman,
J. Colloid Interface Sci., 33 (1970) 562, Honig, Roeberson and Wiersem
a, J Colloid Interface Sci., 36 (1973) 97, who derived the formula for
interactions between ideal spherical particles, while in the case of
particles with a highly variable radius of curvature it mergers with t
hat of Smoluchowski.
