Hydrodynamic and dynamic optical properties of dilute chloroform solut
ions of polymer complexes composed of poly(N-ethyl 4-vinyl pyridinium)
cations and dodecyl sulfate and bromine anions were studied. Bromine
and dodecyl sulfate ions were found to be bound to the chain of polyca
tion. Coefficient of translational friction W, intrinsic viscosity [et
a], and optical shear coefficient were shown to be controlled by the f
ractional content phi of dodecyl sulfate ions bound to the molecular c
hains of polycomplexes (degree of polymerization, 3000). With a decrea
se in phi from 1 to 0.55, a concomitant decrease in [eta] and W as wel
l as a decrease in the absolute values of negative optical anisotropy
of the segments in polycomplexes may be rationalized by an increase in
equilibrium rigidity of the macromolecules. The changes in compactnes
s of the macromolecules of a polycomplex, when the composition of poly
complex was varied, were shown to be primarily associated with the dif
ference in molecular sizes of bromine and dodecyl sulfate anions, whic
h hinder the rotation about chain bonds in a way similar to that obser
ved in flexible-chain comblike copolymers with a random distribution o
f components.
