The reaction of disodium salt of 2,2-bis(4-oxyphenyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexa
fluoropropane with a two-fo Id molar amount of 4-nitro-N-methylphthali
mide under the conditions ensuring aromatic nucleophilic nitro-substit
ution produced imido-4-oxy)phenyl]-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane. Its
hydrolysis and subsequent dehydration yielded dianhydride of the corre
sponding tetracarboxylic acid. Polycondensation of this dianhydride wi
th mono-, di-, tri, or tetraphenyl aromatic diamines in m-cresol produ
ced soluble aromatic polyimides with low melt viscosity.
