A numerical simulation of the penetration of the global atmospheric el
ectric field from the troposphere into the ionosphere has been perform
ed. The numerical model, which we use here, has been described in pape
r 1 (Kuznetsov et al., 1995). Evaluations of the amplitude of the elec
tric mode penetrating into the upper regions, which depends on the fre
quency, the characteristic spatial scale of the field and the wave ele
ctric field orientation relative to the geomagnetic field have been ma
de using realistic models of the anisotropic conductivity. We show tha
t in an inhomogeneous medium the high-altitude behaviour of the electr
ic mode is characterized by the appearance of regions with either vert
ical or horizontal currents being dominant. The possibility of using a
n analogy with the laws for calculating the currents in different regi
ons, namely Kirchhoff's laws for circuits with lumped parameters, is d
emonstrated. Characteristics of the magnetic modes excited in the iono
sphere due to the action of the penetrating atmospheric electric field
s are also described.
