S. Abgrall et al., FRONTAL CEREBRAL ABCESS, A RARE COMPLICAT ION OF SINUSONASAL POLYPOSIS - REPORT OF A CASE, Neuro-chirurgie, 41(5), 1995, pp. 367-371
Sinusonasal polyposis is frequent but usually benign. A 77-year-old wo
man with an history of sinusonasal polyps, presented with fever and ne
urologic impaiment. Radiologic imaging showed a polypoid mass filling
the nose and sinuses, eroding the ethmoid bone, progressing intracrani
ally, and causing brain abscess. The literature is reviewed, according
to the relations between brain abscess development and nasal polyposi
s, with emphasis on intracranial extension of sinusonasal polyps. Trea
tment of the nasal polyps, usually based on the use of local or genera
l corticosteroids, can avoid this serious complication.
