From solvatochromicity of CT-band maxima of complexes of TCNE with met
hylbenzenes in several apolar and polar solvents the inductive effect
parameter, h(Me), of the methyl group has been calculated by the Couls
on-Longuet-Higgins perturbation theory. From the measured solvent depe
ndence of h(Me), the gas-phase value of the same has been determined t
o be -0.38 which is comparable with Streitwieser's recommended value o
f h(Me) = -0.50. The higher value of h(Me) in the ps phase than in sol
ution has been explained.
