IPS Radio and Space Services (IPS) commissioned a new radiospectrograp
h in May 1992. Located at Culgoora, near Narrabri, id northwest NSW, i
t replaces a radiospectrograph constructed by the CSIRO Division of Ra
diophysics in 1966. In conducting this upgrade, IPS has made use of co
mmercially available hardware to replace all of the original instrumen
t except its antennae. An important aspect of the new instrument is th
e acquisition of data in digital form. This, together with software wr
itten by IPS staff, permits a variety of data analysis techniques that
were not previously possible. This paper demonstrates the capabilitie
s of the new instrument by presenting some of the radio-spectrograms o
btained during the past twelve months. Each is accompanied by a short
discussion of ifs salient features. Some of the advanced functions of
the digital display software, such as automated shock speed estimation
, are also outlined.
