B. Denis, ANIMAL HUSBANDRY DISCIPLINES AND VETERINA RY SCHOOLS .2. A GLANCE AT THE INSTRUCTIONS-VETERINAIRES WRITTEN BY CHABERT, FLANDRIN AND HUZARD (1782-1795), Recueil de medecine veterinaire, 171(6-7), 1995, pp. 459-462
The <<Instructions Veterinaires>> was published after the death of Bou
rgelat. They provide us with information on what happened at Alfort du
ring the difficult period of the revolution. The schools (of Lyon and
Alfort) were for example accused of not being sufficiently interested
in animal breeding in general. In their text, the successors of Bourge
lat insisted on the necessity to train veterinary surgeons for a doubl
e role of doctor and animal science technician, the latter being in fa
ct inscribed in the idea of <<art veterinaire>>. However, it is not ce
rtain that the changes made during this period corresponded really wit
h the declared intentions.
