The electroless nickel (EN) plating mechanism in acid baths is propose
d. The influence of the reagents concentration (i.e. nickel ions, hypo
phosphite ions, acetic acid, hydrogen ions) and temperature was measur
ed. Formal reaction orders for nickel and hypophosphite ions were dete
rmined and an empirical rate equation was developed. On the basis of t
hat mechanism the new aspect of hydrocarboxylic acid in EN plating was
presented. The activation energies of nickel and phosphorus depositio
n were calculated.
