IMPROVED CODEBOOK EDGE-DETECTION

A technique for detecting edges directly from a vector-quantized image representation, called codebook edge detection was proposed by Mclean (CVGIP: Graphical Models Image Process. 55, 1993, 48-57). With this m ethod, the edges can be detected by a simple table lookup, a so-called ''edge codebook.'' In this paper, we propose an improved method for c odebook edge detection, which is based on a new type of edge codebook. Experimental results provide that much better performance can be gain ed using this new kind of edge codebook, whose size is even smaller th an that of Mclean's. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
