Abstract
The reaction of 4-picoline with nitric oxide for the synthesis of 4-cy anopyridine has been studied over nickel oxide-iron oxide catalyst in the temperature range 280-360 degrees C. A maximum yield (88%) of 4-cy anopyridine is obtained at a temperature of 320 degrees C over a catal yst NiO:Fe2O3::40:60 at a NO/picoline mole ratio 50. Kinetic studies r eveal that the mechanism of the reaction is of the ''Redox'' type. A t entative mechanism of the process is also suggested.
