Abstract
Positivity and atomicity are traditionally considered as basic conditi ons for direct methods. While the role of atomicity is well understood , the theoretical and practical consequences for a direct-methods proc edure generated by the violation of the positivity criterion are not q uite clear. Triplet and quartet relationships are analyzed in connecti on with the positivity Postulate.
