The structure and photochemical properties of 6-methyl-2,4-diphenyl-1-
(p-tolyl)pyrimidinium perchlorate (1) and 8-dimethyl-2-phenylpyrimido[
1,2-f]phenanthridinium (2) formed as a result of photocyclization of 1
have been studied. The crystal structure of compound 1 has been studi
ed at -140 degrees C and 25 degrees C. In cation 1, the N-tolyl substi
tuent and alpha-Ph ring are noncoplanar with the pyrimidinium fragment
(the angles are 67.9 degrees and 41.1 degrees, respectively), while t
he angle between the gamma-Ph ring and the pyrimidinium moiety is only
7.1 degrees (-140 degrees C). The photocyclization product 2 has a fl
attened structure.
