A series of 14-16-membered tetraazamacrocyclic complexes have been pre
pared by the condensation reactions of 1,2-diaminoethane, 1,3-diaminop
ropane or ortho-phenylenediamine with dibenzoylmethane in the presence
of rhodium(III), iridium(III) and platinum(II) ions as templates. Str
uctures and bonding of the macrocyclic complexes have been proposed ba
sed on elemental analyses, IR, H-1 NMRI electronic spectral studies an
d conductivity, as well as magnetic susceptibility measurements. The s
tereochemistry around rhodium and iridium ions is proposed to be octah
edral, while a square planar geometry is proposed for the platinum com
plexes.
