A large earthquake (Ms = 6.5) occurred near Futuna and Alofi island (S
W Pacific) in March 1993. The focal mechanism solution of the main sho
ck and the seismicity pattern of the aftershocks indicate thrust fault
ing activity beneath the ridge down to 20 km depth. The uplifting of t
he islands and the crustal thickening of the ridge by thrusting are du
e to a local compressive regime related to an irregularity of the Paci
fic plate boundary along the left lateral transform Fiji fracture zone
