We report on a new technique to record the angular distribution of lig
ht which is scattered from a (disordered) material around the backscat
tering direction. The technique is accurate over a large scanning rang
e (500 mrad) which includes the exact backscattering direction, and th
e angular resolution is high (100 mu rad). The technique is particular
ly suitable for the study of coherent backscattering from very strongl
y scattering random media, but it can be applied in any situation wher
e the angular distribution of backscattered light is studied. It allow
ed us to measure for the first time the theoretical value of two of th
e enhancement factor in coherent backscattering. (C) 1995 American Ins
