Abstract
The effect of p-chloromercuribenzoate (PCMB) on oxidative phosphorylat ion and palmitate-stimulated respiration catalyzed by liver mitochondr ia has been studied. PCMB (1 mu M) did not influence oxidative phospho rylation but reduced the inhibitory effect of ATP on this process. PCM B at the same concentration diminished the inhibition of mitochondrial respiration by ADP and ATP in the presence of 10 and 20 mu M palmitat e. PCMB did not affect the inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation and palmitate-stimulated respiration by carboxyatractyloside. It is concl uded that SH-groups of mitochondria localized in the hydrophilic regio n on the outside of the inner mitochondrial membrane are involved in t he regulation of oxidative phosphorylation by ATP and in the regulatio n of palmitate-stimulated respiration by ADP and ATP.
