Copper(II) complexes of bis(salicylidine)-1',5'-disaminonaphthalene, 3
,5-dichlorosalicylidene)-1',5'-diaminonaphthalene and bis(2-hydroxy-1-
naphthalidene)-1',5'- aminonaphthalene have been investigated by the E
PR, UV and IR methods. Very intense charge transfer bands of different
energies as well as a few weak bands due to the d-d transitions of co
pper(II) ion have been observed in the optical spectra. All recorded I
R spectra showed changes typical for tile square-planar Schiff base co
ppcr(II) complexes. The EPR spectra of Cu(ll) ions in the orthorhombic
crystal field symmetry have been recorded and compared with the simul
ated. Despite almost tile same local ligands surrounding of the Cu(ll)
ions (pairs of nitrogen and oxygen atoms) in all investigated systems
tile EPR spectra showed marked differences. The ligand field theory w
as applied to interpret the obtained spin-Hamiltonian parameters. Impl
ications of the EFR data in relation of the complex structure are disc
ussed.
