Abstract
In this paper we review the progress made in implementing nonlinear di rectional couplers as potential all-optical switching devices. We will discuss the operation of the coupler and its application as an all-op tical multiplexing, demultiplexing element and consider the possibilit y of integrating more than one nonlinear switching element. The limita tion of dispersion and nonlinear absorption will also be addressed.
