Bj. Fuller et al., REGULATION OF HEPATIC INTRACELLULAR PH AT HYPOTHERMIA - A COMPARISON OF HIBERNATING AND NON-HIBERNATING SPECIES USING P-31 NMR-SPECTROSCOPY, Cryo-letters, 16(6), 1995, pp. 323-328
Liver metabolism at hypothermia was studied in vitro in livers from no
rmal rat and hibernating squirrels using P-31 NMR spectroscopy. During
continuous perfusion at 6-8 degrees C with oxygenated buffer, livers
from both species maintained levels of high-energy phosphorylated aden
ylates, while intrahepatic pH was shifted to values predicted from the
'alpha-stat' hypothesis. No specific differences in metabolism were d
etected between the homeotherm and hibernating species.
