Abstract
The article compares public debates about automobility in the 1960s an d the 1990s. While many of the specific issues of contention remain th e same - air pollution, safety, traffic congestion - there has been a shift, in recent years, to more global and systemic issues. The author relates these shifts to general transformations that have tak en plac e within the wider environmental debate.
