Abstract
The influence of CGS 21680, an adenosine A(2A) receptor agonist, on st riatal glutamate extracellular levels was tested in a microdialysis st udy in rats. CGS 21680 (10 mu M), infused intrastriatally through the microdialysis probe, greatly enhanced glutamate extracellular levels. These results show that striatal adenosine A(2A) receptors are involve d in the regulation of striatal glutamate extracellular levels. They a lso suggest that adenosine A(2A) receptor antagonists may possess neur oprotective effects in models of striatal excitotoxicity.
