In this paper we examine predictors of marital patterns using longitud
inal data from the high school class of 1972. We take into account the
respondent's economic activity and fertility experience, as well as b
ackground characteristics. We conclude that role changes in early adul
thood are interrelated: disorder in the economic sphere has an effect
on disorder in the family sphere for women, and for both men and women
, having a child prior to marriage is closely linked to a disrupted ma
rital pattern.
