Four hundred-forty adolescents (N = 123 adolescents from divorced fami
lies) were given a set of scales on relationships (intimacy with paren
ts and peers, social support, family responsibility-taking) and psycho
logical variables (happiness, self-esteem, depression and risk-taking)
to determine the effects of divorce on these variables. The adolescen
ts from divorced families differed very little from those of intact fa
milies. As might be expected, they perceived less intimacy with their
fathers as well as less social support, and they assumed more family r
esponsibilities.
