Ms. Mclachlan et al., A STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF SEWAGE-SLUDGE FERTILIZATION ON THE CONCENTRATIONS OF PCDD F AND PCB IN SOIL AND MILK, Environmental pollution, 85(3), 1994, pp. 337-343
The influence of the agricultural use of sewage sludge on the concentr
ations of PCBs and PCDD/Fs in soil, feed and milk was investigated on
four dairy farms. Evidence of contaminant accumulation in the soil was
found on both farms that fertilized with sewage sludge. The concentra
tions in feed and milk from one of these farms were similar to the con
centrations in the matched control, while the concentrations in the sa
mples from the second sludge user were elevated. The study demonstrate
s that the agricultural use of sewage sludge does under some condition
s lead to higher levels of PCBs and PCDD/Fs in food products.
