This paper examines the modeling of complex structures having fine fea
tures such as electronic packages and microstrip antennas. The numeric
al analysis is carried out using the finite difference time domain (FD
TD) method. One of the fundamental problems associated with analyzing
this class of structures is that accurate modeling of their fine featu
res typically requires a large mesh and an exorbitant amount of comput
ational time. The basics of FDTD and its application to electronic pac
kage structures are discussed.
