Superoxide radical production in brain slices of 12-, 24- and 60-day-o
ld rats was measured online during and after 15 min of hypoxia with lu
cigenin enhanced chemiluminescence. We found a typical radical burst a
fter reoxygenation which developed with aging and is almost nonexisten
t in the youngest and most prominent in the oldest group. This cannot
be explained by a decreasing tissue superoxide dismutase (SOD) concent
ration in the brain with aging, since the concentration of the enzyme,
determined in the same age groups, increased with age.
